Public work has its own rules
Civic projects involve procurement rules, public reporting, accessibility requirements and a strong need for budget certainty. Buildings often stay in service for decades, so durability and ease of maintenance matter as much as first cost.
We plan with those realities in mind. Our estimates, schedules and reporting are clear and complete, so owners can explain decisions to councils, boards and taxpayers.
The building types we handle
Our government and civic pages describe each in more detail.
- Municipal buildings and service centres
- Courthouse renovations
- Police and fire facilities
- Libraries and archives
- Military facilities
- Indigenous community buildings
- Public works yards
- Accessible upgrades
- Secure facilities and secure children's facilities
Self-performed systems
Government buildings depend on electrical and mechanical systems that must not fail. HSM's electrical crew is led by a Master Electrician, and our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing. Our low voltage team, led by Adam Mason, handles alarms, access control and surveillance.
Keeping these trades in-house means fewer outside firms in sensitive buildings, a single schedule and faster response when something needs fixing.
Staying in service
Many public buildings cannot close. Counters, courtrooms, dispatch rooms and libraries serve the public every day. We phase work, protect operations, and plan outages with the owner well ahead of time.
With project sizes up to $50,000,000, we fit the renovations and mid-size new builds that many municipalities and agencies need. Our offices in Edmonton and St. Albert answer calls and email 24/7/365.
Working with public owners
Our project managers, including Poppy Jameson and Rupinder Kaur, each with two decades of experience, work with civic owners on scope, schedule and reporting. We are happy to present to committees and councils when it helps decisions move forward.
