Indigenous Community Buildings

Community buildings are central to life in many Indigenous communities. HSM builds and renovates them with respect for local priorities and with our own trades.

Indigenous Community Buildings

Listening before building

Every community has its own goals, traditions, decision processes and timelines. A building for gathering, learning, health or administration should reflect that. We begin by listening to the community, leadership and users before we propose a scope or schedule.

Community involvement, local hiring goals and cultural spaces are often part of the project. We discuss how these can be planned into the work.

Remote and seasonal sites

Some communities are far from Edmonton. Distance affects delivery schedules, crew travel, materials and weather risk. In Alberta, winter roads, spring thaw and short summers can control the schedule.

Self-performing electrical, mechanical and interior work reduces the number of outside firms that have to travel to site. A smaller, consistent crew is easier to plan, house and supervise.

Building types

Typical projects include band offices, health centres, schools and learning spaces, cultural and gathering halls, recreation buildings and housing. Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, and our mechanical crew handle power, heat and plumbing. Our interior systems team and millwork crew handle finishes and custom elements.

Plan for these items

Communities and project teams should consider:

  • Funding source and reporting requirements
  • Local labour and training opportunities
  • Water, heating and power services on site
  • Spaces for ceremony and gathering
  • Long-term maintenance and operation

Getting started

Contact us to start a conversation, not a contract. We would like to hear what the community needs, how decisions are made and what timelines you are working to. Our project managers and trade leads are glad to travel to meet with leadership, tour the site and talk through options before any commitments are made.

Questions we hear

Can you work with community priorities on hiring?

We are open to discussing local hiring and training goals early, so they can be planned into the project.
