About HSM Construction Management

Who we are

HSM Construction Management is the operating name of HSMG Services & Consulting Inc. We build new construction and renovations or tenant improvements up to $50,000,000, from offices and retail stores to hotels, schools and children's facilities.

We have completed more than 1,000 projects. Our offices are in downtown Edmonton and St. Albert, and our phones and email are answered 24/7/365.

Design-build, start to finish

Design-build means one team is responsible for both design and construction. You deal with one company from the first idea to the day you move in, and construction knowledge shapes the design from the start.

We often get involved before the lease is signed. We help with site selection and lease negotiation, with construction cost in view, so tenants know what a space will really cost to build. After that comes design and engineering, then the build, then support once you operate the space.

How HSM delivers this work. Highlighted trades are self-performed by our own crews.

We build with our own crews

Most general contractors hire subcontractors for nearly every trade. HSM self-performs most of the work. Our own electrical team, led by a Master Electrician, and our own mechanical team for HVAC and plumbing sit at the centre of this. We also self-perform low voltage and security, interior systems such as framing, drywall and ceilings, carpentry and millwork, painting, and doors and hardware.

Fewer subcontractors means one schedule and one accountable team. It means tighter quality and cost control, and faster response when something changes.

Based in Edmonton, building across Western Canada

Our head office is in downtown Edmonton, with a second office in St. Albert. From there our crews travel to projects across Western Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Because we send our own electricians, mechanical crews and finishing trades, the quality and schedule are the same in Kelowna or Regina as they are in Edmonton.

Working in the West every day means we plan for winter construction, provincial safety codes and permit systems, and the realities of moving crews and materials over long distances.

Led by CEO Hazim Gaber, our team includes engineers, trade managers, project managers and a safety director. Our office dog, Shadow, supervises most days.

Questions we hear

What size of project does HSM build?

We take on new construction and renovation or tenant improvement projects up to $50,000,000, from a single clinic suite to a complete new commercial building.

Where is HSM based, and where do you work?

Our head office is in downtown Edmonton and we have a second office in St. Albert. We build across Western Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Do you really do the electrical and mechanical work yourselves?

Yes. Our own electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, and our own mechanical crew for HVAC and plumbing do this work on our projects. We also self-perform low voltage and security, interior systems, carpentry and millwork, painting, and doors and hardware.

Why does self-performing matter to me as a client?

Fewer subcontractors means one schedule and one accountable team. Electrical and mechanical work is coordinated by people who answer to the same project manager, which usually means fewer delays, tighter quality and faster answers when something changes.

What does design-build mean?

One company is responsible for both design and construction. You sign one contract, deal with one team, and construction cost and buildability shape the design from the start.

Can you help before I sign a lease?

Yes, and we recommend it. We can review a space with you, flag issues such as short power capacity, long plumbing runs or code upgrades, and give you a construction cost view to use in your lease negotiation.

Do you have in-house engineering?

Yes. Our engineering team is led by our Director of Engineering, Dr. Magdy Istafanous, so design and construction stay closely coordinated.

Do you work on occupied buildings or after hours?

Yes. Many renovations happen while a building stays open. We plan phasing, noise, dust control and after-hours work so your business or your tenants can keep running.

What sectors do you work in?

Offices, retail, healthcare, education and childcare, hospitality, industrial, energy and fuel, transportation, recreation, multi-family residential, government, faith and community, banking, technology, automotive, and food and beverage.

What happens after my project is finished?

We can stay on to look after the building. Our turn-key services include security systems, digital signage, computer networks, furniture and building maintenance, handled by the same people who built the space.

How do you manage safety?

Health and safety is led by our Director of Health and Safety, Ghilda Gaber. Every project gets hazard assessments, site orientation and daily oversight, and because most of the crew on site is our own, safety expectations are consistent.

How quickly can you respond?

Calls and email are answered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For existing clients, our own trades can respond to urgent electrical, mechanical and building issues without waiting on a subcontractor.
