High End Food Store

A food store needs power, water and drainage in places most shops never think about. This project shows how we plan for that.

Food retail is a services job

Behind a polished food store sits a lot of infrastructure: refrigeration, ventilation, grease and floor drains, hot and cold water, and large electrical loads. The visible finishes sit on top of it.

We plan these services before design is final. Our engineering group reviews loads and layouts, and our electrical and mechanical crews confirm that what is drawn can be built within budget and the building's capacity.

Electrical and mechanical in-house

Our electrical team, led by a Master Electrician, installs power for coolers, freezers, display cases, ovens, lighting and checkout. Dedicated circuits and clear labelling make service easier later.

Our mechanical crew handles HVAC and plumbing. Food stores need balanced ventilation, good humidity control and plumbing for sinks, prep areas and washrooms. We also coordinate drains, floor sinks and grease management where the design calls for them.

Finishes made to be cleaned

Floors, walls and ceilings in food areas must withstand cleaning, moisture and heavy use. We choose materials that are durable and easy to wash, and detail joints and corners to keep dirt out.

Public-facing areas can be more refined. Our carpentry and millwork team builds counters, shelving and display features, while our painters and interior systems crew finish walls and ceilings.

  • Refrigeration-ready power
  • Floor drains and prep sinks
  • Cleanable walls, floors and ceilings
  • Display counters and shelving

Rules and approvals

Food premises in Alberta are reviewed by health authorities in addition to normal building and safety code permits. We coordinate construction with these requirements and build the project so inspections go smoothly. Owners should talk with the health authority early and share any equipment lists with us as soon as they are known.

Our low voltage team adds cameras, alarms and digital signage, and one team ties the whole project together.

Questions we hear

Can HSM coordinate refrigeration installs?

We build the power, plumbing and ventilation that refrigeration needs and coordinate with equipment suppliers on timing and layout.
