Transit Station Construction

Transit stations are shared spaces used by thousands of people in every kind of weather. HSM builds and renovates stations to be safe, durable, lit and easy to maintain.

Transit Station Construction

Durability and safety first

Public spaces get heavy use, and sometimes misuse. Finishes must resist impact, graffiti, salt, moisture and cleaning chemicals. Materials, fasteners and fixtures should be vandal-resistant and easy to replace. Good lighting and clear sightlines improve safety and discourage problems.

Alberta winters shape design. Entrances need good weather protection, heated waiting areas where planned, snow-resistant roofs and drainage that does not freeze into ice sheets on platforms and walkways.

Systems and trades

Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, installs lighting, power, emergency systems and connections for fare equipment and signage. Our mechanical crew handles HVAC, plumbing, drainage and heating for waiting areas and staff rooms. Our low voltage group installs surveillance, public address, help points, access control and networks, which are core to rider safety.

Our interior crews build staff offices, washrooms, retail or kiosk spaces and finishes. Our carpenters and framing crew construct shelters, enclosures and custom elements, and our door and hardware team provides durable, secure entries.

What to plan for

Work in operating stations is carried out with clear routes for riders, often at night, and with coordination with the transit operator. Permits and approvals involve the owner and the municipality. Accessibility is a priority, including level access, tactile surfaces, signage and clear paths.

Plan for maintenance. Easy cleaning, replaceable parts and reliable access to equipment reduce lifetime cost. We can also assist with wayfinding signage and digital displays that help riders find their way.

Keeping riders moving

Riders do not wait for construction to finish. We plan temporary routes, protected walkways and clear signage, and we coordinate closures with the operator well in advance. Quiet hours, such as overnight service gaps, are used for the noisiest work.

Regular updates to the operator's communications team help riders know what to expect.
