Bus Depots

A bus depot stores, cleans, fuels and services a fleet, and houses the people who run it. HSM builds and upgrades depots with our own electrical and mechanical crews.

Bus Depots

A large, busy building

Bus depots have big floor areas, tall doors and heavy loads. Floors must carry buses, hoists and equipment, and drainage must handle washdown water and winter melt. Ventilation is a major item, since many engines run at once in cold weather. Exhaust capture and makeup air need to be designed carefully.

Depots operate on early starts and late returns, so upgrades are best done by section, with spare capacity elsewhere in the building.

Electrification and systems

Many fleets are adding electric buses. That shifts the depot's electrical needs sharply upward: new service, switchgear, chargers, conduit and charging management, as well as space for battery-related safety systems. Utility upgrades take time, so start early. Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, plans and installs this work and coordinates with charger suppliers.

Our mechanical crew handles heating, ventilation, compressed air, plumbing and drainage. Our low voltage group installs access control, cameras, fleet networks and fire alarm systems, and our interior crews build driver rooms, offices, training space and washrooms.

What to plan for

Coordinate construction with the fleet schedule. Closing a section for a few weeks may be possible in the off-peak season. Temporary parking and routes during construction should be defined at the start.

Fire protection requirements for charging, fuelling and battery areas deserve early review with the authority. Permits include building and Safety Codes permits. Equipment lead times, particularly for electrical gear and chargers, often set the real schedule.

Phasing around the fleet

A depot cannot close, so we plan work in sections. Buses are rotated through unaffected bays, charging or fuelling continues, and garage doors, floors and services are replaced in sequence. A written phasing plan agreed with the operator keeps everyone aligned.

Winter is the busiest and hardest season for depots, so we schedule the biggest changes for summer when we can.
