Designing for ageing in place
Seniors' residences range from independent living to supportive and assisted living. Wider doors, lever hardware, grab bars, step-free showers, good lighting and slip-resistant floors help residents stay independent for longer.
We work with owners, operators and designers to turn those needs into buildable details. Our doors and hardware crew, millwork team and interior systems crew handle many of these elements in-house.
Life safety and care systems
Nurse call, fire alarm, door access, surveillance and wandering-resident alerts are important in many seniors buildings. Our Low Voltage Systems Manager, Adam Mason, leads the team installing alarms, AV and security systems, so they are coordinated with the electrical work and not added later.
Comfort and air
Residents are sensitive to temperature, drafts and noise. Heating, cooling and ventilation should be steady, quiet and easy to control. Our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing, and our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, provides reliable power, lighting and emergency systems.
Many seniors' projects are renovations in a building with residents inside. Noise, dust and changes to routines can be hard on residents and staff. We plan work areas, hours and routes with the operator, protect common spaces and keep corridors clear.
Our health and safety program is led by Ghilda Gaber, and we take extra care around infection control, mobility and emergency exits.
Plan for these items
Operators often consider:
- Dining, lounge and activity spaces
- Suite layouts and bathroom renovations
- Secure outdoor access
- Generator or backup power needs
- Staff work areas and medication rooms
Getting started
Contact us to talk through your building, residents and timeline. Our project managers, including two with two decades of experience each, will walk the building with your team and outline a safe, phased plan.
Questions we hear
Can renovations happen while residents stay?
Often, with careful phasing and communication. We plan work around daily routines and keep exits and corridors clear.
