Community Centre Construction and Renovation

A community centre serves many people at once: kids, seniors, sports leagues and rental groups. HSM builds them with our own trades for a single, accountable team.

Community Centre Construction and Renovation

Many uses, one building

Community centres often combine a gym, meeting rooms, a kitchen, a daycare or program space, and a lobby that doubles as a gathering place. Each use has different needs for ventilation, acoustics, security and washrooms.

Flexible layouts help. Operable walls, durable floors and good storage let one room serve many programs. We help owners test those choices against budget before design is locked.

What our crews do

Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, handles power, lighting, emergency systems and data. Our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing, including commercial kitchens and washrooms. Our interior systems team builds walls, ceilings and acoustic treatments, and our carpenters build reception counters, shelving and built-ins.

Self-performing these trades keeps the schedule in one hand. Changes are decided quickly, and the people who build the work are the ones who answer questions after it opens.

Funding and phasing

Many community centres are funded by municipalities, associations or grants with reporting deadlines. We help owners break work into logical phases, so spaces reopen as soon as they are ready and funding milestones can be met.

Accessibility is a priority. Ramps, automatic doors, accessible washrooms and clear wayfinding are normal parts of a community centre scope.

Plan for these items

Before design starts, it helps to confirm:

  • Who uses the building and at what hours
  • Rental and revenue spaces
  • Kitchen and food service needs
  • Security, lighting and camera needs for evenings
  • Parking, drop-off and snow clearing

Working with boards and committees

Community projects often involve boards, volunteers and public consultation. Our project managers are used to presenting options, costs and schedules clearly to groups, and to adjusting scope as funding becomes certain.

Questions we hear

Can a community centre stay open during renovations?

Often partly. We phase the work and separate construction areas from public routes so programs can continue where it is safe.
