Why arenas upgrade lighting
Older arena lighting is often dim, uneven and costly to run. Newer fixtures give better light on the ice, better visibility for players, officials and spectators, and generally lower energy use.
Better light also helps broadcast or livestreaming of games, and makes the building feel safer and more welcoming.
More than swapping fixtures
A good lighting project looks at the whole system. Mounting height, spacing, glare, controls, dimming and emergency lighting all matter. Existing wiring, panels and conduit may need review before new fixtures go up.
Because we self-perform electrical work, the same people who assess the existing system install the new one. There is no gap between a lighting designer, an electrical subcontractor and a general contractor.
Working at height, working around ice
Fixtures sit high above the ice and seating. We plan access with lifts, protect the ice surface and surrounding finishes, and schedule work in the off-season or in short windows between bookings. Our Director of Health and Safety, Ghilda Gaber, leads the safety planning for work at height and around the public.
Winter timing matters in Alberta, so we also plan deliveries and lift use around weather and slippery conditions.
What to decide early
A few choices shape the budget and schedule:
- Target light levels for recreational, competitive or broadcast play
- Control systems, such as dimming or occupancy scheduling
- Whether to upgrade ceiling, painting or sound at the same time
- Utility incentive programs, which may apply and are worth checking
- Lead times for fixtures
Commissioning and handover
After installation, our crew tests, aims and commissions the new system and trains your staff on the controls. If something needs adjusting in the first season, the same team returns. Our calls and email are answered 24/7/365.
Questions we hear
Can lighting be replaced without closing the arena?
Sometimes. It depends on access and ice schedule. We plan lift work and protection so that closures are as short as possible.
