Funeral Home Construction and Renovation

Funeral homes serve families at a difficult time. HSM builds and renovates them with our own trades, planning quiet, careful work around services.

Funeral Home Construction and Renovation

Atmosphere matters

Chapels, visitation rooms and arrangement offices should feel calm, private and dignified. Lighting, sound control, finishes and furniture all contribute. Hard noise or poor acoustics can break the mood of a service.

Our interior systems crew builds acoustic walls and ceilings, our carpenters and millwork team build custom casework and displays, and our painters finish the spaces with care.

Back-of-house functions

Funeral homes also have preparation rooms, refrigeration, garages, storage and staff areas. These need appropriate ventilation, drainage, finishes and security, along with careful separation from public areas. Our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing, and our in-house engineers help design ventilation and drainage for these rooms.

Some funeral homes include crematoria or work with specialist providers; those systems have their own regulatory requirements, which we review early with the owner.

Power, sound and technology

Reliable lighting and sound are important for services and livestreaming. Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, installs lighting, dimming and emergency power. Our low voltage team installs audio, video, music and security systems.

Work is scheduled to avoid services and visitations. Noisy tasks happen when the building is empty, and public areas remain clean, quiet and presentable. We can work evenings or weekends if needed, and we protect finished rooms carefully.

Funeral homes are community fixtures, so closures should be short. Phased work helps one chapel or room stay available.

Plan for these items

Owners should consider:

  • Number and size of chapels
  • Family and visitor parking
  • Livestream and recording systems
  • Accessible entrances and washrooms
  • Vehicle entry and discreet access

Getting started

Tell us about your services calendar and which rooms matter most. We will build a plan that keeps your chapels available and your families undisturbed.

Questions we hear

Can renovations avoid disrupting services?

Yes, with phasing and scheduling around services. Noisy work is done when the building is empty.
