Food Bank Construction and Renovation

Food banks move large volumes of food through small spaces. HSM builds and renovates them with our own mechanical and electrical crews, so cold storage and workflow run smoothly.

Food Bank Construction and Renovation

Cold storage and food safety

Food banks depend on coolers, freezers and dry storage. Refrigeration equipment, insulated panels, temperature monitoring and sanitary finishes all matter. A failed cooler can mean a lost week of donations.

Our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing, and our in-house engineers coordinate with refrigeration specialists. Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, makes sure power and backup are sized for the load.

Receiving, sorting and distribution

Layout decides how many people a food bank can serve. Loading docks, receiving areas, sorting tables, pallet racking, packing and client pick-up each need space and clear paths. Floors need to be durable and easy to clean, and doors wide enough for pallets and carts.

Our interior systems crew builds walls and ceilings, our painters apply washable coatings, and our doors and hardware crew installs heavy-duty doors.

Client-friendly spaces

Many food banks now offer choice-based shopping, which feels more like a store and treats clients with dignity. Reception, waiting and privacy areas make a big difference. Our carpenters and millwork team build shelving, counters and display fixtures.

Food banks cannot stop during renovation. We phase the work, set up temporary storage where needed, and protect food and equipment from dust and disruption. Volunteers and deliveries are a daily reality, so our team coordinates schedules with the manager.

Winter demands can be highest, so Alberta winter planning is part of the schedule.

Plan for these items

Managers should consider:

  • Cooler and freezer capacity
  • Backup power for refrigeration
  • Loading dock and truck access
  • Security and access control
  • Volunteer areas and washrooms

Getting started

Show us how food moves through your building from the dock to the client. We can then propose layout and cold storage upgrades that fit your volumes and budget.

Questions we hear

Do you build cold storage?

Our mechanical team and engineers coordinate cold storage with refrigeration specialists, and we build the surrounding structure and power.
