Sanctuaries and sound
A sanctuary needs to carry speech and music clearly, with good sightlines and comfortable seating. Acoustics depend on room shape, finishes and the sound system. A large room with hard surfaces can be echoey, and soft surfaces can make music dull.
Our interior systems crew builds acoustic ceilings and wall assemblies. Our Low Voltage Systems Manager, Adam Mason, leads installation of sound, projection, video and recording systems.
Heating, lighting and power
Church buildings are used heavily on a few days and lightly on others. That makes heating and ventilation strategies important, as does the ability to zone different areas. Our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing, and our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, installs lighting, power and emergency systems.
Lighting for worship is often layered, with dimming and scenes for services, events and weekday use.
Wood, finishes and detail
Pews, pulpits, altars, screens and trim are central to a church interior. Our carpenters and millwork team can build or repair custom pieces, and our painters finish the work. Where a heritage or older building is involved, we take extra care to protect existing features.
Churches grow and change. Common projects include new entrances, accessible washrooms, nurseries, kitchens, classrooms, fellowship halls and added parking. We help congregations phase work around services, special holidays and weekday programs.
Fundraising often controls timing, so we provide staged budgets and clear drawings that committees can share with members.
Plan for these items
Congregations should think about:
- Seating capacity and flexibility
- Accessible entrances and washrooms
- Livestream and recording needs
- Kitchen and fellowship space
- Parking and snow clearing
Getting started
Start with how your congregation uses the building across a week and a year. We can then propose a phased plan, with budgets suited to your fundraising and key dates in the church calendar.
Questions we hear
Can a church stay in use during renovations?
Often, with phasing and temporary arrangements. We schedule noisy work outside services and special events.
