Designing around prayer
Prayer halls need open floor space, clear orientation and comfortable carpeting, with separate or well-planned areas as the community requires. Entries need shoe storage, and washrooms and wudu areas must be well drained and easy to clean.
We listen to the community's leadership first. Layout, orientation and finishes should reflect how the congregation prays and gathers, and we build to those needs.
Water, air and comfort
Wudu areas involve a lot of water, so waterproofing, slope, drainage and hot water supply are central. Our mechanical crew installs HVAC and plumbing, including floor heating or other options where owners prefer them. Ventilation and heating must handle large crowds during Friday prayers and holidays like Eid.
Light, sound and detail
Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, installs lighting, power and emergency systems, including dimming and decorative fixtures. Our low voltage team installs sound systems that carry the call to prayer and sermons clearly, with quiet operation and good coverage.
Our carpenters and millwork team can build mihrabs, minbar elements, screens and shelving, and our painters and interior crew finish the walls and ceilings.
Many mosques include classrooms, libraries, halls, kitchens and offices. We help committees phase a project as funds are raised, so a first stage is usable and later stages connect cleanly. Planning around Ramadan and other key dates keeps the community able to use the building when it matters most.
Plan for these items
Committees should think about:
- Prayer hall capacity at peak times
- Wudu and washroom layout
- Parking and traffic on busy days
- Funeral and ceremony needs
- Accessibility and women's and youth spaces
Getting started
Contact us early in the planning stage. We would like to hear about the community, expected attendance and the most important dates. From there we can propose a design approach, budget and schedule.
Questions we hear
Can you build in phases as funds are raised?
Yes. We plan phases so each stage works on its own.
