Self-performed trades

Doors and Hardware

Doors are used all day, every day, and they connect to security, fire safety and accessibility. HSM installs doors and hardware with its own crew and ties them into our electrical and low voltage work.

Doors and Hardware

What our doors and hardware team does

HSM's doors and hardware work covers commercial doors and frames, hardware and locksets, automatic operators, storefronts, glass partitions, fire doors, overhead doors, keying systems, barrier-free upgrades and ongoing maintenance.

One crew handles the door from frame to final adjustment, and works with the same company's electricians and low voltage team when the door includes power, a card reader or an alarm contact.

Why self-performing helps

A door touches many trades. The frame is set during framing, the door is hung after drywall, hardware is fitted after paint, and electrified hardware needs wiring and a control system. When those trades are separate companies, details slip between them.

With HSM, our interior crew sets frames to the right tolerances, our painters finish them, our door installers hang and adjust, and our electrical and low voltage teams connect power and access control. Fewer handoffs means fewer doors that stick, swing the wrong way or fail to latch.

What to plan for

Doors have long lead times. Fire-rated, custom and storefront doors, and electrified hardware can take weeks. A door schedule that lists every door, its hardware and its requirements should be settled early.

Code requirements are significant. Exit doors, fire-rated openings and accessible routes are covered by the Alberta Building Code, and permits and inspections apply. Our project managers keep track of those requirements.

Finally, think about use and upkeep. A door that takes constant traffic needs heavier hardware, and a regular maintenance plan prevents costly replacement. We offer ongoing door service after handover.

Questions we hear

Can HSM handle doors that connect to access control?

Yes. Our electricians and low voltage team connect electrified hardware, card readers and alarm contacts, so the door and the system are installed and tested together.
