Doors and hardware

Automatic Operators

Automatic operators open doors for people who cannot, or should not have to, push them. HSM installs the operator and its power and controls as one job.

Automatic Operators

What automatic operators do

An automatic operator opens and closes a door by motor. Types include low-energy swing operators activated by a push button, full-power swing doors, sliding doors and revolving or folding systems. Push-button operators are common for barrier-free access at entrances, washrooms and corridors.

They help people using wheelchairs, walkers, strollers or carrying loads. They also improve traffic flow in busy entrances and keep doors closed in winter, saving heat.

Power, controls and safety

An operator is only as good as its wiring and controls. It needs a reliable power source, a control circuit, activation devices, and often safety sensors. Where it is part of an access control system, it also needs a connection to readers and door contacts.

HSM's electrical team provides the power and conduit, and the low voltage team connects activation buttons, sensors and access control. Our door installers mount the operator, adjust the door and test it. Because one company handles all of it, the system is tested end to end before handover.

Fire safety adds another layer. Operators must work with fire alarm systems, exit rules and manual operation in a power failure. Our team confirms these requirements with the design and the authority having jurisdiction.

What to plan for

Existing doors may not suit an operator. Heavy doors, weak frames or tight spaces need review. Sometimes the best fix is a new door and frame, which we can supply.

Winter is a factor. Cold weather, ice and snow affect entrance doors, thresholds and mats, and the operator should be rated for the conditions.

Where the button goes matters. It must be reachable, placed to meet barrier-free requirements and clear of the door swing. We review locations on site before drilling.

Plan for service as well. Operators need regular inspection, and a maintenance plan keeps the entrance working. We can include door service in a long-term plan.
