Separating species and functions
Cats and dogs are often kept apart in waiting and kennel areas, and exam rooms, surgery, treatment, x-ray, pharmacy and boarding each have their own needs. Good layout cuts stress for animals and staff.
Walls and doors are built to be strong and easy to clean, and our interior systems team builds partitions that also reduce sound transfer.
Ventilation and odour control
Odour is the main complaint in many clinics. Dedicated exhaust, balanced air and, where possible, negative pressure in kennel and treatment areas help. Our HVAC crew designs ventilation with the mix of uses in mind.
Air quality also matters for staff, who spend long days in these rooms.
Floors, drains and washdown
Floors need to be slip-resistant, seamless and sloped to drains in wet areas. Walls need to take washing and the occasional bump from a cart or kennel. Our mechanical crew installs plumbing and floor drains, and our finishing crews handle durable wall and floor surfaces.
Grooming and bathing areas need hot water capacity and proper drainage.
Having one company handle plumbing, drainage, flooring and wall finishes in the same areas avoids gaps where water and odour could collect later.
Surgery, imaging and power
Surgical suites need good lighting, clean finishes and reliable power. Imaging equipment may need shielding, set by a qualified specialist. Our Master Electrician-led crew installs lighting, power and backup where required.
Our low voltage team installs data, cameras, alarms and access control. Pharmacies and controlled substances are stored in secure rooms that we build with strong walls and doors.
Planning notes
Check lease terms for noise, odour and animal use before committing. Outdoor runs, parking and winter access for pet owners deserve attention. Early involvement lets HSM compare spaces and estimate real build cost.
