Pharmacy Construction

A pharmacy is part retail store, part regulated dispensary. HSM builds both sides with its own electrical, low voltage and interior crews.

Pharmacy Construction

A dispensary built for security and workflow

The dispensary needs controlled access, adequate counter space, shelving, secure storage and a safe work environment for staff. Layout affects accuracy and speed, so we work from your approved plan and talk through details such as counter heights, outlets and lighting.

Our low voltage team installs access control, cameras and alarms, and our drywall and door crews build secure walls and doors.

Counselling and consultation rooms

Many pharmacies include private rooms for consultations, immunizations and vaccinations. These need sound privacy, a sink where required, comfortable lighting and ventilation. Our interior systems team builds the walls to the deck, and our mechanical crew handles plumbing and air.

Accessibility is important, with wider doors and clear space for wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Refrigeration and power

Medication refrigerators and coolers must hold temperature reliably. They need dedicated circuits, and many owners add backup power or alarms. Our Master Electrician-led crew sizes the circuits and sets up lighting and controls.

Point-of-sale, prescription software, labels and printers need good network cabling, which our low voltage team provides.

The retail side

Most pharmacies also sell health and beauty products, so shelving, display lighting and clear sightlines count. Our carpenters and millwork team build counters, shelving and displays that fit the layout.

Entrances in Alberta need heating and mats for winter, and automatic doors help accessibility.

Planning notes

Professional regulators and licensing bodies may have requirements for the dispensary. Check them early with your advisors. A renovation can often be phased so the pharmacy stays open, using temporary barriers and off-hours work for noisy tasks.

A pharmacy cannot go dark for long. We stage construction so prescriptions can still be filled, and we plan shutdowns of power and water for short windows. Our own electrical and mechanical crews make those shutdowns easier to schedule.

After opening, our maintenance team can look after lighting, doors, hardware and HVAC.
