Long-Term Care Renovations

Renovating a long-term care home means working around people who live there. HSM plans phasing, safety and infection control carefully, and uses its own crews to keep disruption low.

Long-Term Care Renovations

Residents come first

Residents and staff are present throughout construction. Noise, dust, odours and blocked corridors can affect comfort and health. We plan work in sections, protect routes, and schedule noisy tasks at times that suit the home.

Our Director of Health & Safety, Ghilda Gaber, leads site safety, including infection control measures with the home's own team.

Rooms, washrooms and common areas

Typical projects include resident rooms, accessible washrooms, dining rooms, lounges, nurses' stations and corridors. Accessible showers, grab bars, wider doors and non-slip floors all improve safety.

Our interior systems and carpentry crews rebuild rooms efficiently, and our painters finish quickly so rooms can be returned to use.

Mechanical and electrical upgrades

Older homes may have aging HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. Comfort is a key concern, since residents are sensitive to temperature. Our mechanical crew upgrades heating, ventilation and plumbing, and our Master Electrician-led crew upgrades panels, lighting and emergency systems.

Our low voltage team handles nurse call, door alarms, access control and cameras.

Self-performing electrical, mechanical and interior work lets us return finished rooms to residents sooner, since each trade follows the last without waiting for outside schedules.

Homelike, durable finishes

Finishes should feel warm but handle heavy use and frequent cleaning. Good lighting helps residents with limited vision, and clear wayfinding helps those with memory challenges.

We work with your team and designers on choices that are practical to maintain.

Flooring transitions, handrails and lighting levels deserve special attention, because small changes can make a big difference to safety and independence.

Planning notes

Phasing may take longer than a vacant building, but it avoids moving residents. Plan for temporary relocations, staff communication, and winter conditions that affect deliveries and access. Early planning with HSM gives your team a clear schedule and a single point of contact.
