A wide range of spaces
Post-secondary projects include lecture halls, classrooms, teaching labs, student services, offices, study areas, cafeterias and common spaces. Each has its own needs for seating, sound, ventilation and technology.
We work within the campus's standards and approval processes, which are often detailed, and we keep records and communication clear.
Many campuses have standards for finishes, hardware, controls and equipment. We review them at the start so that selections match what the facilities team already maintains, which lowers long-term upkeep.
Technology everywhere
Students and faculty expect strong wireless coverage, displays, projectors, microphones and recording. Our low voltage team, led by Adam Mason, installs data cabling, AV, sound systems, alarms and cameras. Our electricians provide power for charging and equipment.
Lecture halls need good acoustics and sightlines, and our interior systems crew builds ceilings and walls to suit.
Labs and specialty teaching
Teaching labs may involve fume hoods, special exhaust, gases, sinks and heavy equipment. Our mechanical and electrical crews handle the services, and our in-house engineering, led by Dr. Magdy Istafanous, helps review loads and airflow.
Casework, finishes and equipment should be chosen for heavy use by many students.
Working on a live campus
Campuses run nearly year-round, with summer terms and busy exam periods. We plan phasing, access, parking, deliveries and dust and noise control with the campus team, and use summer and break periods for the loudest work.
Winter conditions affect access and exterior work, so we plan temporary protection and clear paths.
Planning notes
Start with the academic calendar and work backward. Long-lead items such as lab equipment, lighting and AV should be ordered early. HSM provides a single point of contact and a clear schedule.
Student areas wear quickly. Durable flooring, wall protection and furniture reduce repairs, and our building maintenance service can help keep spaces in shape after handover.
