Rooms for play-based learning
Early learning environments are organized around activity zones: art, construction, reading, dramatic play, quiet corners and sensory spaces. Storage, sinks and display walls support these zones.
Our carpentry and millwork crews build low shelving, cubbies, storage and display walls to suit the program, and our interior systems team builds walls and ceilings that stand up to daily use.
Outdoor learning is often part of the program, so a direct, safe link from the classroom to a play area should be considered, including doors, thresholds and winter drainage.
Light, sound and calm
Natural light helps, and artificial lighting should be soft, even and adjustable. Echo can make a room stressful for young children, so acoustic ceilings and soft surfaces are valuable.
Our Master Electrician-led crew installs dimmable lighting and plenty of safe outlets, and our HVAC crew keeps ventilation quiet.
Washrooms and care areas
Child-sized fixtures, change areas and hand-washing stations are central. Floors must be slip-resistant and drains reliable. Our mechanical crew handles plumbing, hot water control and ventilation.
Kitchens or food prep areas need extra ventilation and cleanable finishes.
Family-friendly entry and security
Parents and caregivers come and go, so entry areas need space for strollers, coats and boots, particularly in winter. Secure entry, cameras and intercoms help control access, installed by our low voltage team.
A welcoming reception, clear signage and a family area help build trust.
Planning notes
Programs vary, so start with your educational plan and licensing requirements, then design the space around them. HSM can review a candidate space before a lease, check ventilation and washroom capacity, and plan the build around your opening date.
With electrical, mechanical and interior work all handled by our own crews, we can complete rooms in sequence and hand them over for staff to set up early.
