Designed for young learners
Younger students need low counters, accessible washrooms, wide corridors, clear sightlines and spaces for movement. Finishes should be tough, easy to clean and soft where children fall or play.
Our carpenters and millwork crews build cubbies, counters and storage, and our interior systems team builds walls and ceilings that hold up to daily use.
Secure entries and supervision
Modern schools control who comes in. Secure vestibules, intercoms, cameras, door controls and clear lines of sight from the office help staff keep students safe. Our low voltage team, led by Adam Mason, installs alarms, surveillance and access control.
Door hardware matters too. Our doors and hardware crew installs durable, accessible hardware suited to young users and busy hallways.
Air, light and sound
Classrooms are full of people for long hours, so ventilation matters. Our mechanical team designs HVAC for occupancy, balances air flow and installs plumbing for washrooms and drinking fountains.
Lighting should reduce glare and be easy to maintain, and our Master Electrician-led crew installs it with controls and emergency lighting. Acoustic ceilings help with speech clarity, especially in shared rooms.
Working near students
Most elementary projects happen at occupied schools. We separate work zones, protect corridors and plan noisy work for evenings, weekends and breaks.
Winter adds slush, ice and short days, so safe entries, clear paths and temporary lighting around the site are part of the plan.
Because HSM carries most of the scope with its own crews, we can add a night shift or weekend crew for a short break without waiting for outside trades. That helps when rooms must be ready on the first day back.
Planning notes
Confirm approvals, equipment lead times and the school calendar early. HSM can give you a clear schedule and a single point of contact from planning through to handover.
