What it means
After ductwork and equipment are installed, technicians measure airflow at each diffuser and grille, the speed of fans and the flow in piping. They then adjust dampers, valves and fan settings until the readings match the design values. A report records the results.
The work happens near the end of the project, after systems are running but before the space is handed over.
Why it matters
Without balancing, some rooms get too much air and others too little. The result is noise, draughts, uneven temperatures and wasted energy. Complaints in the first weeks of occupancy are often traced back to a system that was never properly balanced.
Balancing also confirms that the system delivers the fresh air the code requires.
How HSM handles it
HSM includes testing and balancing in the mechanical scope and schedules it before substantial completion. Our mechanical crew installs the system with balancing in mind: dampers are placed where they can be reached, and ceilings are left open until the work is verified.
Where required, independent balancing reports are provided to the designer and the authority having jurisdiction. Any adjustment found necessary is made by the same crew that built the system, so the fix happens during the same visit.
What to plan for
Allow enough time before move-in. Balancing needs the ceilings, doors and furniture openings in their final state, so rushing it too early can mean doing it twice.
If your business is sensitive to temperature or air quality, such as a lab, clinic or server room, tell us. We can set tighter targets and record the results.
