Alberta Building Code

The Alberta Building Code is the set of minimum requirements for the design and construction of buildings in the province. It is based on the National Building Code, with Alberta-specific changes.

Alberta Building Code

What it means

Buildings in Alberta are regulated under the Safety Codes Act and its codes. The building code addresses structure, fire protection, exits, accessibility, energy efficiency, plumbing and more. Separate codes cover electrical, fire, plumbing and gas work.

The codes are updated from time to time, and the edition in force when a permit is applied for generally applies.

Why it matters

The code shapes everything from how many exits a space needs to how walls are rated and what ceilings are made of. A design that ignores it will not pass review, and changes after construction starts are expensive.

Code requirements also depend on the occupancy type, so a change of use, such as office to clinic or restaurant, can trigger new requirements.

How HSM handles it

HSM's in-house engineering team, led by Dr. Magdy Istafanous, reviews every project against the code at the start, so that exits, fire separations, ventilation, electrical and plumbing requirements are built into the design and the budget.

Our electricians and mechanical crew work to the electrical and plumbing codes daily, and our interior systems crew builds fire-rated assemblies as a matter of routine. We can explain how a requirement affects your layout, and where there is flexibility we will tell you.

What to plan for

Tell us the intended use of the space, even if it may change. Code requirements are tied to use, and an early conversation avoids redesign.

Codes change over time. If you are working with older drawings, tell us, because the edition in force at the time of permit application may require updates that affect cost.
