Technology and data

Research Facilities

Research facilities mix labs, offices and special equipment. HSM builds them with in-house engineering and our own mechanical and electrical crews.

Research Facilities

Many needs in one building

A research building can include wet labs, dry labs, instrument rooms, offices, meeting spaces and storage. Each zone needs different air, power and finishes. Vibration-sensitive instruments, cold rooms and gas supply lines add further requirements.

Early coordination between researchers, designers and builders prevents conflicts later.

Building services that perform

Our mechanical crew installs ventilation, exhaust, process piping and plumbing. Our electrical crew, led by a Master Electrician, installs normal and emergency power, equipment circuits and lighting. In-house engineering, led by Dr. Magdy Istafanous, supports design coordination and load checks.

Our low voltage team installs access control, monitoring and data networks for instruments and offices.

Renovating live research space

Researchers often cannot stop their work. We plan phased construction, dust and vibration controls and carefully timed shutdowns. We coordinate with your team on moving instruments and samples.

What to plan for

Funding cycles and equipment deliveries often drive timing. Specialty equipment can be late, and commissioning takes time. We keep a clear schedule, flag risks early and coordinate permits under Alberta Safety Codes so the facility opens as planned.

Research programs change as projects start and end. We can plan labs with flexible benches, movable casework and ceiling-mounted services, so rooms can be reconfigured without major construction. That approach takes more thought up front, but it lowers cost over the life of the building and keeps researchers working with fewer interruptions.

Safety is central. Research buildings need emergency showers, ventilation controls, fire protection and clear procedures during construction. Our health and safety program, led by Director of Health and Safety Ghilda Gaber, applies to every site. We coordinate closely with your own safety staff so construction does not create risks for ongoing work.
