Technology and data

Data Centre Construction

Electrical and cooling systems are most of a data centre. HSM builds both with our own crews, led by a Master Electrician, so the systems that matter most are coordinated in-house.

Data Centre Construction

Power first

A data centre starts with its electrical service. That includes utility feeds, switchgear, UPS systems, generators and distribution to every rack. Redundancy, often described as N+1 or 2N, shapes the whole layout.

Our electrical crew installs and tests the distribution, and works with your equipment suppliers on commissioning. In-house engineering supports load calculations and coordination of protective devices.

Cooling and airflow

Servers turn almost all their power into heat. Cooling can use precision air conditioners, chilled water, hot and cold aisle containment or liquid systems. Our mechanical crew installs the piping, ductwork and controls and works with the design team on airflow.

Alberta's climate helps. Cold outdoor air can support free cooling for part of the year, and the design must also handle summer peaks and winter freeze protection.

  • Raised floor or overhead distribution
  • Fire detection and suppression
  • Leak detection

Security and structure

Physical security matters. Our low voltage team installs access control, cameras and alarms with layers from the site boundary to the rack. Floor loading, ceiling heights and cable routing are checked early. Our interior systems crew builds the walls and ceilings that separate white space from support areas.

What to plan for

Lead times for generators, switchgear and chillers can be long. Commissioning and testing take real time, including load bank tests. Plan utility upgrades early, as service extensions may need approval and construction by the utility. We can help set a schedule that accounts for these dependencies, and for adding capacity in stages as demand grows.

Data centres often grow in stages. We can plan the shell, electrical room and cooling plant for full capacity while building only the first phase. That keeps early costs lower and makes each expansion simpler. Our crews stay familiar with the site, which helps when you return to add halls, racks or backup capacity.

Questions we hear

Can capacity be added in phases?

Yes. We can build the base infrastructure and leave space and pathways for later stages.
