Rules shape the layout
Cannabis stores in Alberta are regulated, and licensing rules affect how the store is laid out, how product is stored and displayed, and how the entrance and sales area are arranged. These requirements are separate from the Alberta Building Code and municipal permits.
We design and build to your approved plans, and we recommend confirming licensing and municipal requirements early, since they can affect the lease and the schedule.
Security is a big part of the build
Secure storage, cameras, alarms, access control and monitored systems are core features. Our low voltage team, led by Adam Mason, installs surveillance, intrusion alarms and access control in-house.
Our drywall and door crews build secure back rooms, with solid walls, strong doors and quality hardware.
Sales floor and customer experience
Layouts often include a reception or entry check area, a sales floor with controlled displays and a checkout counter. Millwork, lighting and finishes set the tone. Our carpenters build display cases, counters and feature walls to match the brand.
Ventilation is important to manage odours, and our mechanical team designs HVAC and exhaust to suit the use.
Electrical, lighting and data
Point-of-sale systems, inventory tracking, cameras and display lighting all depend on good power and network cabling. Our Master Electrician-led crew installs panels, lighting and controls, and works with the low voltage team on cabling.
What to plan for
Licensing, permits and landlord approvals can all affect timing. Municipal rules on location and signage differ, so we advise confirming them before finalizing a lease. Early involvement lets HSM estimate construction cost for different locations so you can compare.
Once the store is open, HSM can support it with security systems, networks, digital signage and building maintenance, so one company looks after the systems that keep the store compliant and running.
