Painting and finishes

Wallcoverings

Wallcoverings add pattern, texture and durability that paint cannot. HSM's own finishers install them on walls our own crews prepared.

Wallcoverings

Types of wallcovering

Commercial wallcoverings include vinyl in many weights and textures, fabric-backed products, grasscloth and natural fibres, metallic and patterned designs, and custom printed murals and graphics. Vinyl is common in corridors, healthcare and hospitality because it resists wear and can be cleaned.

Some are sold in rolls, others in panels, and the choice affects pattern matching, seams and how much material is wasted.

A smooth wall makes the difference

Wallcovering shows every flaw underneath. Uneven joints, rough patches and dust create bubbles and shadows. Walls usually need a higher drywall finish level and a suitable primer or sizing coat.

Because our drywall finishers and wallcovering installers are on the same team, they plan the wall finish level together before the board is taped. The wall is built for the covering, not corrected after.

Layout counts as well. Pattern repeats, seam locations, corners and openings should be planned so that the pattern reads properly on both sides of a doorway and across a long corridor. Our installers start at an agreed point and work outward, avoiding awkward slivers.

What to plan for

Order enough material from the same batch. Dye lots differ, and a later order may not match. Extra rolls for repairs are also worth keeping.

Environmental conditions matter. Wallcovering adhesives need stable temperature and humidity, and new drywall should be dry. Moisture behind vinyl can lead to mould, so the wall should be dry and, in humid areas, the right system must be chosen.

Fire performance is regulated for interior finishes in many building types, so product data should be checked against code requirements. We review that with the design team.

Finally, think about repairs. Corridors take impacts from carts, and having spare material and a simple repair method keeps the finish looking right.
