Safety

Electrical Safety

Electrical hazards are serious and often invisible. HSM's electrical crews, led by a Master Electrician, work to controlled and consistent procedures.

Electrical Safety

Master Electrician oversight

Our Electrical Manager, Adam Williams, is a Master Electrician. He leads our electrical crews and sets the standard for how electrical work is planned, carried out and checked. Because electrical is self-performed, the same leadership applies on every project.

Our electricians do not rely on memory or habit alone. They follow written procedures, confirm each step and are expected to question a plan that does not look right.

Lockout and isolation

The safest electrical system to work on is one that cannot become energized while someone is working on it. Our crews isolate equipment, apply locks and tags, and verify that circuits are dead before work begins. The person who locks out the equipment is the person who removes the lock.

  • Identify every source of energy
  • Isolate and lock out
  • Test to confirm the circuit is de-energized
  • Keep the lock until the work is complete

Working de-energized

Our default is to work de-energized. Live work is not routine. It is considered only when shutting down is not possible, and then it requires planning, qualified people and the right protective equipment. In an occupied building, shutdowns are scheduled with the client in advance so work can be done safely, often after hours.

Temporary power also needs care. Cords, panels and lighting on a construction site are inspected and protected from damage, water and traffic, so ordinary tools do not become hazards.

Arc flash awareness

An arc flash is a sudden release of energy that can cause severe injury. Our electricians are trained to recognize where the risk exists and to use proper procedures and protective equipment around it. Other trades on site are told where energized equipment is located and which areas to stay out of.

Our mechanical, low voltage and interior crews work close to electrical systems every day. Because they belong to the same company, we can brief them directly and coordinate shutdowns without relying on outside parties.

Questions we hear

Do you work on live equipment?

Our default is de-energized work. Live work happens only when it cannot be avoided and only with planning and qualified people.

Who tells other trades where it is unsafe?

Our electrical leads and project managers brief the other crews and mark off areas when equipment is energized.
