Veterinary Clinic Fit-Out Guide

A veterinary clinic combines a medical office with animal housing. Drainage, ventilation and noise control are the main design issues.

Veterinary Clinic Fit-Out Guide

Zoning the clinic

Separate waiting, exam, treatment, surgery, kennel and staff areas. Dogs and cats should have separate waiting zones where possible. Pharmacy and records require secure storage.

Clear flow limits stress for animals and staff.

Consider separate entrances or time slots for emergency cases and for pickups, so waiting areas stay calm.

Ask your veterinary association about layout standards and any inspection requirements.

Drainage and flooring

Kennels, treatment areas and wash rooms need floor drains, sloped floors and seamless, chemical-resistant flooring. Walls need durable, washable surfaces up to a suitable height.

Our plumbers and interior systems crews coordinate drains, slopes and finishes.

Clean, dry storage for food, medication and supplies is just as important as the treatment rooms.

Ventilation and odour

Animal areas need higher fresh air rates and good exhaust. Air should flow from clean to dirty areas and not recirculate. Surgery needs clean air and stable temperatures.

Our mechanical crew designs and balances the system for these uses.

Surgery lighting and temperature control deserve special attention and often need dedicated circuits.

Noise and comfort

Barking is loud. Insulated walls, solid doors, acoustic ceilings and distance from waiting areas help. Radiant floor heating in kennels is popular and our mechanical crew can install it.

Sound control also helps neighbours.

Consider outdoor relief areas and separate exits for pets, and plan how waste is handled and stored.

Power, gas and security

Anaesthesia, imaging and sterilization equipment require reliable power and sometimes shielding. Medical gas or oxygen lines may be needed. Our electrical and low voltage teams install power, access control, alarms and cameras for drug and equipment security.

Storing controlled drugs correctly is a regulatory matter, so confirm requirements with your professional body.

Questions we hear
