Gas Piping

Natural gas fuels heating units, water heaters, kitchen equipment and more. HSM's own crews install the piping to code and test it before it is put in service.

Gas Piping

Where gas is used

  • Rooftop units, unit heaters and boilers
  • Commercial water heaters
  • Kitchen ranges, fryers and ovens
  • Laundry and process equipment
  • Generators in some installations
  • Fireplaces and decorative gas appliances

Sizing and routing

Gas pipe is sized for the total connected load and the length of the run. A pipe that is too small starves equipment at peak demand, which shows up on the coldest day. Our engineers calculate sizes using the equipment ratings.

Routing needs care. Pipes may run in ceilings, along roofs or underground. Exterior piping needs protection from damage and corrosion. Pipes must avoid electrical equipment, ducts and ignition sources as the code requires.

Utility and permits

The gas utility supplies the meter and often the line to it. If your building needs more capacity, such as when a restaurant moves into a former office, the utility must be involved. That can take time, so we raise it early.

Gas work in Alberta is permitted and inspected under the Safety Codes system, and work must be carried out by qualified people. Our crew handles permits and inspections as part of the project.

Testing, safety and shutoffs

Before gas goes in, the system is pressure tested and inspected. Equipment is then purged and commissioned. Appliances are only lit once connections are approved and combustion air and venting are confirmed.

Shutoffs matter. Each appliance needs its own, and kitchens usually need an emergency shutoff linked to the exhaust or suppression system. Our electricians wire these interlocks and our mechanical crew installs venting, so the full system is tested together.

Carbon monoxide and gas detection may be required in certain spaces. We recommend them as good practice even when not required.

If your site has no gas service, we can help you weigh electric alternatives. If you are leasing, ask about gas capacity before signing. Our maintenance service includes periodic checks of connections and appliance operation.
