Mechanical and HVAC

Ductwork

Ductwork carries conditioned air to every room. HSM's own mechanical crew fabricates, installs and seals it to match the layout and the airflow the design requires.

Ductwork

Duct design basics

Duct size, shape and routing control airflow, noise and energy use. A duct that is too small makes noise and starves a room. A poorly routed duct wastes fan energy. Our engineers size ducts for the airflow each space needs, and our crew installs them as designed.

Layouts are drawn with ceiling heights in mind. Ducts, pipes, lights and sprinklers all share limited space above the ceiling, so we coordinate before anything is hung.

Types and materials

  • Rectangular and round galvanized sheet metal duct
  • Spiral duct for exposed or high-ceiling spaces
  • Flexible duct for final connections to diffusers
  • Insulated or lined duct where noise and condensation are concerns
  • Stainless steel or other materials for special exhaust needs
  • Dampers, fire dampers and access doors as required

Sealing, insulation and testing

Leaky ducts waste energy and deliver less air than designed. We seal joints, insulate where required and support ducts properly. Where the design requires it, pressure testing confirms the system is tight.

Fire and smoke dampers go where ducts pass through rated walls and floors. These are life safety devices, and they need correct installation and access for inspection.

Renovation challenges

Modifying existing ductwork is common in tenant improvements. When a floor plan changes, ducts must be extended, capped or rerouted. Old ducts may be dirty, damaged or uninsulated, so we inspect and report before reuse.

Because our carpenters, framers and ceiling crews work for HSM, we know exactly when to leave openings and when to close up. Our electricians run lights, devices and controls with the same layout in hand.

After installation, air is balanced so each space receives the intended flow. Balancing reports are provided so you can see the results. If you hear noise or feel drafts after move-in, call us and our own crew can follow up without dispute over who is responsible.
