What it means
Each sprinkler head is triggered by heat, and only the heads near a fire open. The system is fed by a supply line and controlled by valves, with alarms that signal when water flows. Coverage is designed for the layout and use of the space.
Head locations are based on ceiling layout, wall positions and what is stored or done in the room.
Why it matters
When walls, ceilings or equipment move in a tenant fit-out, sprinkler heads usually need to move with them. Heads must stay clear of obstructions and be placed at the right distance from walls and lights. Ignoring this can fail inspection.
Sprinkler work must be done by a qualified fire protection contractor, and the system must be tested afterward.
How HSM handles it
Sprinkler design and installation are specialized, and HSM brings in qualified fire protection specialists for this work while managing it as part of our schedule. Our interior systems and ceiling crews coordinate the layout of heads with ceilings, lighting and ducts, which our electrical and mechanical crews place at the same time.
By planning ceilings as one coordinated drawing, we avoid last-minute moves and conflicts. We also coordinate shutdowns with the building so that protection is out of service for as short a time as possible.
What to plan for
Share your ceiling and lighting plan with us early. Ask the landlord about any rules for shutting down the system, which often need advance notice.
